I’ve been trying to get Owasp ZAP to work on my Kali test machine. but I kept getting an error that I need to upgrade my Java:

“ZAP requires a minimum of Java 7 to run, found 1.6.0_36”

So it seems straight forward enough, just update Java… 🙂

Here’s how:

Download the latest Java SE Development Kit from Oracle:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

I got the 32bit version listed as: jdk-8u121-linux-i586.tar.gz

Then from my shell I extracted the content into the /opt folder:
tar -xzvf /root/jdk-8u121-linux-i586.tar.gz
mv jdk1.8.0_121 /opt
cd /opt/jdk1.8.0_121

Then install and enjoy:
update-alternatives –install /usr/bin/java java /opt/jdk1.8.0_121/bin/java 1
update-alternatives –install /usr/bin/javac javac /opt/jdk1.8.0_121/bin/javac 1
update-alternatives –install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla-javaplugin.so /opt/jdk1.8.0_121/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 1
update-alternatives –set java /opt/jdk1.8.0_121/bin/java
update-alternatives –set javac /opt/jdk1.8.0_121/bin/javac
update-alternatives –set mozilla-javaplugin.so /opt/jdk1.8.0_121/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so

Just run zaproxy from the shell or from the applications menu.
